Dear Colleagues,
We continue to make progress with the integration planning for our proposed combination with Pfizer. One of our most important priorities has been to design an R&D operating model to create the next generation of medicines, vaccines, and devices for patients. Through the proposed combination, we have the opportunity to create an R&D engine that blends traditional internal science capabilities with our Open Science model to strengthen the combined company’s Innovative and Established businesses and enhance the growth profile of Pfizer.

Strengthening GEP R&D:

To address this opportunity for the Global Established Products (GEP) business R&D efforts, I am pleased to announce that David Nicholson, Allergan’s Executive Vice President, Brand R&D will take on a new role as Senior Vice President, Research & Development Head for GEP upon closing of the merger. With 34 years of business and R&D experience, including more than 20 new medicine and device approvals attributed to teams he has led, David is the right leader to build and expand the capabilities within GEP to drive long-term value creation. Following the close, David will report to John Young and will be a member of the GEP Leadership team as we position GEP to generate sustainable growth.

Strengthening GIP R&D:

To strengthen Global Innovative Pharma (GIP) and Oncology business, we are creating a new unified center for late-stage development that will be called the Global Product Development group. The new organization will also preserve a close connection with our key therapeutic areas and will be led by Rod MacKenzie, currently Pfizer’s Group Senior Vice President of Pharma Therapeutics R&D. Following the close, Rod will serve as Chief Development Officer reporting to me.

Rod brings to this role extensive experience as a research scientist. He has led drug development and safety in numerous leadership positions throughout his 30 year career at Pfizer. With his extensive knowledge and deep scientific background Rod has the skills needed to build and lead a single unified platform that will drive a high-quality, efficient drug development process to accelerate our ability to bring new treatments to patients.
LOGO    Rod’s new group will be composed of: GIP late stage development; Oncology late-stage development and Development Operations that currently sits in Pfizer’s Worldwide Research and Development organization. Reporting to Rod will be Patrizia Cavazzoni who leads Pfizer’s Worldwide Development Operations, Mace Rothenberg who heads Pfizer’s development for Oncology, and Ken Verburg, who leads Pfizer’s development for Global Innovative Pharma. Through the integration planning process these leaders, as well as leaders from the late stage development team at Allergan, will work closely with Rod on a final organizational design, as well as process and governance improvements.

Next Steps:

The leaders announced today will help guide future organizational decisions, and I look forward to making additional organizational announcements as we get further into the integration planning. I am confident that most Allergan colleagues will have important roles to play in the combined company.

Ian Read and I agree that strong leadership will create a stronger and more efficient R&D engine across our Innovative and Established businesses, enhancing our ability to achieve our mission of becoming the world’s premier biopharmaceutical company and fulfill our purpose of bringing innovative therapies to patients around the world that significantly improve their lives.

I expect the next wave of announcements in early April and will continue to keep you informed as decisions are made. In the meantime, please continue to do your jobs well and be bold in your daily efforts to deliver our medicines to the patients who need them.

Regards,
