Earlier in the evening, Katie Hoff, US Swim Team Champion, and Jennifer Delaney, Sr. Product Manager of Playtex Sport, presented a $25,000 check to Dawnn Cleveland of Chicago, IL who was the recipient of the 2007 Team Player of the Year award. Dawnn is one of the most influential members of the Girls’ Advisory Board, a select group of young women leaders working with Girls in the Game (GIG), an organization that provides physical activity, health education, and leadership development for girls in Chicago.
The Team Playtex Sport campaign was created to encourage girls to be more active and confident in their daily lives. The team was captained by U.S. soccer star Abby Wambach and swimming champion Katie Hoff. Every month a new “Team Player” was added to the team who had demonstrated through a written essay that she played through life with confidence, consistent commitment and a winning attitude. Each monthly winner received $2,500 for continued education and $2,500 to grant to her favorite not-for-profit organization. In its 28th year, the Women’s Sports Foundation Annual Salute to Women in Sports is a celebration of women’s sports and recognizes the achievements of all female athletes from myriad sports. Annually, the Foundation crowns two Sportswomen of the Year—one each in Team and Individual categories—and names the Billie Jean King Contribution Award and Wilma Rudolph Courage Award winners. This year’s award winners are: Lorena Ochoa, Individual Sportswoman of the Year; Monica Abbott, Team Sportswoman of the Year; Michelle Kwan, Billie Jean King Contribution Award winner; and the Rutgers Women’s Basketball Team, Wilma Rudolph Courage Award winner. This Awards dinner nets more than $1,000,000 annually.
