Local Broward County Accident Attorney Comments on S. Florida's Deadliest Intersections

South Florida is a hotbed for fatal traffic accidents, and often, driver error is to blame

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, January 23, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Drivers in South Florida are dying at an alarmingly high rate, according to the latest data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The state of Florida ranked third out of all 50 states in terms of fatal traffic deaths, and Southern Florida proved to be a particularly dangerous area for drivers and pedestrians.

Jason Chalik, of Chalik & Chalik Injury Lawyers, witnesses the impact of Florida's dangerous driving conditions on a daily basis.

"It is clear to me that Florida's influx of new residents combined with seasonal tourists and longtime residents have made our roads more crowded, and less safe than ever," Chalik said. "Every day we meet somebody whose life has been negatively affected by a serious traffic accident, whether it has caused them injury or resulted in the death of their loved one."

South Florida Is a Hotspot for Dangerous Intersections

Florida as a state ranks poorly in terms of traffic safety, and its sky-high traffic fatality rates are due in no small part to a couple of counties in southern Florida.

Miami-Dade and Broward counties, which collectively include cities such as Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Hollywood, Miami, Homestead, and Hialeah, are some of the most dangerous intersections in the entire state.

Among the intersections in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties where the most fatal accidents occurred in the past year are: Pines Boulevard and South Flamingo Road in Pembroke Pines; A1A and Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale; Northeast Second Avenue and 36th Street in Miami; Alton Road and Dade Boulevard on South Beach.

Reasons for high death tolls at these intersections range from a high flow of pedestrians, to drivers being under the influence of alcohol and drugs, Florida's rainy weather creating unsafe driving conditions, and general carelessness by drivers.

"With steady population growth in Florida, drivers have to be more cautious than they have ever been to avoid causing a serious accident on increasingly crowded roads," Chalik adds. "The stakes in a car accident could be a human life, and this is too high of a price to act carelessly behind the wheel."

How To Protect Yourself and Others on the Road

You cannot always avoid being in an accident, but you can do your best not to cause one. Some ways that drivers can lower their risk of causing an accident are by:

• Refraining from texting while driving
• Taking an Uber if you drank alcohol or have taken drugs
• Keeping your eyes on the road at all times
• Abiding by the speed limit
• Keeping a safe distance from the car in front of you
• Driving defensively by assuming the worst in any given situation
