Martinez, Calif. August 14, 2020 – The CoCo San Sustainable Farm, a project of non-profit AgLantis, is an innovative urban farm project in Contra Costa County which grows fresh produce for the Contra Costa/Solano Food Bank using regenerative sustainable methods. The farm is 15 acres located on Central Contra Costa Sanitary District’s buffer land. This very large community farm uses Central San’s state-approved agricultural recycled water, which is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, providing free organic fertilizer. AgLantis co-Founder is Diablo Valley College Horticulture Professor Bethallyn Black, who is a Resource Conservation District Board Member, Master Gardener and organic farmer. Professor Black guides the farm to success.

The Travis Credit Union Foundation is raising funds for non-profit organizations in local communities who are providing resources to families, seniors and children impacted by COVID-19. AgLantis has been selected as one of 29 non-profits in Contra Costa County to be the recipient of up to $40,000 in funds.

AgLantis seeks to meet the fast-increasing food needs of the community by expanding production to nine more acres. The farm currently produces about 1,000 pounds per week of fresh produce from one half acre. The farm expects to donate hundreds of thousands of pounds of fresh produce grown using organic methods with expansion of planted fields to nine more acres. Demand for food bank assistance has dramatically increased since Covid-19 has struck our communities with hundreds of thousands needing help.

The Travis Credit Union Foundation is providing a Challenge where they will match every dollar donated to the Travis Credit Union Foundation in the name of AgLantis up to $20,000. AgLantis has until September 30, 2020 to raise the matching $20,000. The donations raised will be matched dollar for dollar by the Travis Credit Union Foundation. AgLantis intends to use donations to expand irrigation and buy needed equipment and seed.

AgLantis has four goals: Food Equity; Education; Environmental Protection and Economic Development and Job Training. Farm labor is provided by volunteers and interns funded through the Workforce Opportunity Investment Act and other Federal training programs. “Every aspect of science and engineering happens on a farm: physics, soil science, hydrology, microbiology, along with mechanical, electrical and civil engineering, said Carolyn Phinney, Founder and President of AgLantis. “This is a chance for youth to learn science, engineering and math from hands-on experiences. Dr. Phinney went on to say. “You never know which experience will spark a young person’s interest in a career.”

Every dollar donated will be doubled by the Travis Credit Union Foundation and used to grow produce to feed hungry neighbors in our community. No donation is too small to help.
