Massy, Essonne May 11, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - Geoflex, the cloud service operator enhancing GPS/GNSS-based applications, has unveiled field results demonstrating the feasibility of lane-level navigation with its corrected GNSS technology.

The results were presented in a webinar held in front of a global automotive audience made of more than 300 professionals coming from 40 countries across the world.

Lane Level Navigation
Lane Level Navigation requires the exact position of a car in a specific driving lane to provide, based on this position, specific visual and voice guidance to the driver.

Lane Level Guidance is the next big thing in "GPS navigation", offering more comfort to the driver in complex road scenarios where multiple lane changes are required in a timely manner to get to the right destination.

Additionally, a GPS navigation system understanding its precise lane can get much smarter to guide the driver through traffic and to estimate its time of arrival. As an example, if your vehicle is allowed to drive in a carpool lane, its estimated time of arrival will be significantly different from others driving in standard lanes a few meters nearby.

High Accuracy GNSS
Nowadays standard GPS and other GNSS (GALILEO, BEIDOU, GLONASS) receivers are providing an accuracy between 3 and 10 meters and often worst in an urban environment with high buildings. This level of accuracy, even if improved by smart filtering and map matching techniques cannot enable lane-level navigation.

To mitigate this problem, cameras and computer vision technologies can be applied. However, these systems are costly, limiting their use to higher-end car models.

Geoflex revealed a Minimum Viable Solution to achieve Lane Level Navigation without any additional hardware with a common navigation unit. The main addition is a pure software and service plug-in. In test drives, the Geoflex service delivers an optimized precision of 99,7% of computed positions within 1.62 m (cross-track), i.e. half the size of a standard lane in Europe and North America. This level of precision is obtained in a suburban driving scenario, with a mass-market single band GNSS receiver and GNSS antenna, without any other sensor.

"GNSS is back in the auto industry" commented Romain Legros, CEO at Geoflex. "From navigation to ADAS and ultimately to driverless cars, there is a need for high accuracy sensors. Until recently GNSS has been disregarded by the industry because its error level was not matching the high requirements of next-generation automotive applications. However, with our correction services, GNSS is back in the game."
