Revenue growth

Reviewing a company’s long-term revenue performance reveals insights into its quality. Any business can have short-term success, but a top-tier one grows for years.

With $2.65 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, CoreCivic is a mid-sized business services company, which sometimes brings disadvantages compared to larger competitors benefiting from better economies of scale. On the positive side, it can still achieve high growth rates because it’s working from a smaller revenue base.

CoreCivic’s revenue grew at a solid 7.3% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years. This shows CoreCivic’s demand was higher than that of many business services companies.

CoreCivic quarterly revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but within business services, a half-decade historical view may miss new innovations or demand cycles. CoreCivic’s annualized revenue growth of 15.8% over the last two years is above its five-year trend, suggesting its demand was strong and recently accelerated. CoreCivic year-on-year revenue growth

This quarter, CoreCivic reported strong year-on-year revenue growth of 28.2%, and its $744.1 million in revenue topped Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 5.4%.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 9.6% over the next 12 months, according to S&P, a deceleration versus the last two years. Still, this projection is noteworthy and suggests the market is forecasting success for its products and services.

Operating margin

CoreCivic’s operating margin has stayed roughly the same over the last 12 months, averaging 9.8% over the last five years. Its profitability was mediocre for a business services company because of its suboptimal cost structure.

CoreCivic’s operating margin may have fluctuated slightly, but it has generally stayed the same over the last five years. This raises questions about the company’s expense base because its revenue growth should have given it leverage on its fixed costs, resulting in better economies of scale and profitability.

Earnings per share

Revenue trends explain a company’s historical growth, but the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) points to the profitability of that growth. For example, a company could inflate its revenue through excessive spending on advertising and promotions.

CoreCivic’s EPS grew at a 10.5% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years, higher than its 7.3% annualized revenue growth. However, this alone doesn’t tell us much about its business quality because its operating margin didn’t improve.

CoreCivic trailing 12-month EPS (non-GAAP)

As with revenue, we analyze EPS over a more recent period because it can provide insight into an emerging theme or development for the business.

For CoreCivic, its two-year annual EPS growth of 32.3% was higher than its five-year trend. That acceleration is a positive sign, especially given the already high growth base.

In Q3, CoreCivic reported adjusted EPS of $0.49, up from $0.24 in the same quarter last year. The result comfortably beat analysts’ consensus estimates, a positive for shareholders. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects CoreCivic’s full-year EPS to grow 53.9% from $1.54 to $2.37, according to S&P.

Key takeaways from CoreCivic’s Q3 results

CoreCivic delivered two key positives: Revenue came in well above analysts’ consensus estimates, and full-year EPS guidance topped Wall Street’s consensus by a wide margin. Even with those results, investors were likely hoping for more. Shares edged lower 1.5% to $30.07 immediately after the release.

CoreCivic’s latest quarter is only one piece of its longer-term business quality picture. Quality, combined with valuation, can help determine whether the stock is a buy. Read the full research report here (it’s free).
