Integration Planning Moves Ahead at Integration Summit #2
More than 90 leaders from Medtronic and Covidien came together in Minneapolis last week to attend the second Covidien Integration Summit. The meeting was an opportunity for integration team leads from across the globe to share progress on integration planning to date and further refine plans to bring Medtronic and Covidien together. While Medtronic cannot begin integrating the two companies until the official close date (expected in early 2015), significant efforts by representatives of both companies are already underway to create robust integration plans that will allow for a smooth transition after the deal closes.
During the meeting, Medtronic and Covidien integration leaders from each region presented their vision of how the integration will be executed during the first 100 days after the deal closes. This was an important opportunity for participants to compare and contrast their thinking and make adjustments to ensure business continuity. It also gave the IMO an opportunity to identify some key issues requiring further clarification and follow-up.
The Summit also featured presentations by a set of critical functions that cross all workstreams, including HR, IT, Finance, Communications and Culture.
Preparing for this integration is a tremendous amount of work. One of the most challenging aspects is ensuring we are all aligned on the work being done, and to understand how each teams integration plan impacts every other teams plan. Getting to this level of detail is critical to success. Coming together for this Summit allowed us an important opportunity to work collaboratively to answer these questions and develop this detail, Core IMO team member Brett Knappe said.
The integration planning is focused on ensuring post-closing transition that will not disrupt our customers or operations while also bringing the companies together.
On the second and third days of the Summit, regional integration leaders met with their function and business counterparts in smaller work groups to ensure that all groups are aligned and executing toward common goals.
In the end, participants walked out of the Summit with a clearer understanding of the scope of their work and increased visibility into the type of support they can expect from other workstreams and functions during integration.
Integration teams are now working on the next detailed iteration of their work plans, and will reconvene to share those plans at the next Integration Summit, which will take place in late November or early December.
