Kimberly Rosales explains how a business can stay focused during market changes

Many say that having your own business is like an obstacle course without an end goal. This doesn't mean that you have to go through life willy-nilly, moving according to which way the wind blows. It is one thing to flow and quite another to sail aimlessly to see if the wind blows by chance. Keeping in mind that there will always be difficult moments in the business world, Kimberly Rosales, an expert in entrepreneurship, shares some steps to overcome this process properly.

When it is said that there is no final goal, many refer to the fact that as you move forward, you will always set new goals and challenges. In other words, you will never get to a place where you can say, “That's it, I don't have to do anything more.”

“You are the only engine of your business, and if you want what you do to work, you must refuel it with the best fuel and go to the workshop to check it from time to time because, in all that walking, there are many potholes that you find and many mistakes that you make. It's totally normal and it's part of the process,” says Rosales.

It's the mistakes that take you off the road, and you know it because you feel you've lost your way. There may be some symptoms, such as feeling happy with what you are doing and it may even generate some rejection. You feel that your effort has been for nothing and you even feel exhausted and have the feeling that you have to start from scratch once again.

The problem in all this is to think that what has happened to you is because you are not up to the task, you are a disaster, etc. When all this happens to you, it is because you have made a mistake in your doing, that is to say, in your strategy, and probably even though you saw from the beginning the possibility that you could be beaten, you did not contemplate it and you bet everything on one card.

You will only advance if you risk and sometimes it happens that you risk too much because you want to move to the next level and you rush your decisions. In other words, you have to go through an intermediate level first before you get to the one you want.

It can be scary to stop the operation completely because you have the feeling that if you stop completely, it is as if you were going to lose everything you have achieved. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Stopping altogether has a double effect. First, you stop wearing yourself out doing something that you have already proven does not work or works only halfway. On the other hand, it allows you to take a real picture of what is happening and to be able to reflect on what has happened in an objective way. Unemployment is temporary, it can be days or a few weeks and it is for sure that the world is not going to end because you do it.

Let go of your frustration without looking for someone to blame. As long as you don't do this, you will not be able to think or evaluate the situation objectively. It is important that you do not look for culprits. Otherwise, you will enter a loop of victimhood and anger that will only delay the time it takes to get out of the rut.

“There is no blame, only responsibility, and that is yours,” Rosales assures. “You made a decision that took you to the wrong place because you believed in something, and after your experience, you no longer believe in it. Now you are in the process of finding a new solution. There is no more.”

Don't be afraid to seek support to be heard and get greater clarity if you need it. These can be support from trusted people in your personal or professional environment with whom you maintain regular contact. It can also be support from professionals such as coaches, mentors or experts that you hire because you feel unable to go out on your own. The road should never be traveled alone and having help is essential to keep moving forward.

“Connect with everything that makes you happy,” suggests Rosales. “This is vital so that you are now truly in a position to pick up your activity from the right place. Take a few days off (perks of being your own boss) and enjoy whatever you enjoy most alone or in the company of your choice. For me personally, it helps me a lot to connect with nature in the company of those I love the most.”
