Art For The People—interactive Exhibit— At Morris Museum By In-demand Artist Philip Robinson

MORRISTOWN, N.J. - Jan. 23, 2024 - PRLog -- An exhibit that enables people from all walks of life to reimagine themselves, or see an "awakening" from established multi-media artist Philip Robinson is on display through February 11th at the Morris Museum, officials said.

"We're grateful to have another month for people to see and feel a different version of themselves with Philip Robinson's The Awakening," said Simone Craig, CEO of Art in the Atrium, which curated this exhibit for the coveted "In the Spotlight" space of the museum. "His work is in such high demand all over the world, we want everyone to have access to it before leaving Morristown."

The Awakening, is a life-size, hand-carved tailored suit made of wood with mirror and stainless steel, which allows viewers to envision themselves wearing it while passers-by observe this possibly awakening moment.

"These pieces allow my viewers to be able to put themselves in a space.  They may not have seen what they look like, but it gives them an idea of what they could be. What they may want to be, right? And then they may say, you know, 'I think I look good in this. Maybe I want to go try that out and see what that's about, you know?' It also allows for continuous viewing between the viewer looking in the figure, putting themselves in the figure, versus being outside the figure," Robinson said. "I'm really overjoyed that we were able to make this happen and bring the work in." Philip Robinson says that his work on display at Morris Museum is a "full-circle moment" for him, that his mom used to take him to similar spaces, illustrating that one doesn't need to go to the "big city" to see great artwork.

"We are delighted to have this opportunity to showcase Philip's work in a prominent and meaningful space within the Morris Museum," said director Tom Loughman. "In a time when we talk about people 'seeing themselves' in contemporary art, his mirrored sculptures generate interactive portraits that do just that. The Museum's deep connection to the ATA artist community, meaningful links to New Jersey creatives, and appetite for celebrating sculpture came together beautifully in this important installation."

"The other wonderful aspect of Philip's work is that he says he uses local sourcing and dendrochronology, when working with wood, so art-goers can take in and be part of the 'homegrown aesthetic'," Craig said. Art in the Atrium serves the Morristown, NJ area with Black-artist made pieces.

This exhibit is made possible by the Morris Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate; New Jersey Arts and Culture Renewal Fund; Morris Arts, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts; and Art in the Atrium. It is on view through February 11, 2024. Free and accessible on-site parking is available. The location: Morris Museum, 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. General Admission is $12, members are free.
