He often worked jointly with doctoral students, emphasizing the possibilities for urban applications. His best-known development in this field is the Hypercube Queuing Model. The Hypercube Queuing Model uses a rigorous mathematical foundation for an important class of distributed queuing systems. This applies to emergency response systems, including police, fire and emergency medical.
In addition to his prestigious academic career, Dr. Larson managed an independent consulting firm for 40 years. His firm catered to the public and urban sectors. With expertise in operations research and mathematical modeling, Dr. Larson's firm undertook various public projects in New York City.
"Model Thinking for Everyday Life" will not be Dr. Larson's first publication. He has co-authored an "Urban Operations Research" textbook with Professor Amedeo Odoni at MIT, which has since been translated into multiple languages and cited by hundreds of individuals. His PhD thesis at MIT led to him authoring a book called "Urban Police Patrol Analysis."
Among Dr. Larson's other achievements, he has served as the president of both the Operations Research Society of America (ORSA) and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). He co-founded the MIT BLOSSOMs (Blended Learning Open Source Science Or Math Studies) program, which offers one of the first widely distributed science and math-oriented Open Source Learning repositories ever created.
Shortly after the publication of "Model Thinking for Everyday Life," Dr. Larson's lifetime of achievement and contributions to the field of operations research was acknowledged by his induction into the Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry.
