New WellTheory Report Finds Its Proprietary Care Model Improves Autoimmune Symptoms and Outcomes for Employees

The Autoimmune Disease Platform Releases Data One Year After Launching Its Enterprise Solution

WellTheory, a first-of-its-kind virtual solution for the 50 million Americans suffering with autoimmune disease, today revealed promising health outcomes from the first cohort of employees enrolled in its program. WellTheory’s proprietary care model built on over a decade of clinical evidence has shown the potential to improve key health outcomes across autoimmune disease patients, while also demonstrating lower healthcare costs.

Health Outcomes

Based on clinically-validated health outcomes questionnaires, including the PROMIS, WellTheory’s model resulted in:

  • 81 percent of members reporting improved digestive symptoms, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and indigestion
  • 55 percent of members reporting improvements in fatigue
  • 45 percent of members reporting improvements in overall pain
  • 43 percent of members reporting improvements in overall sleep
  • 35 percent of members reporting improvements in mental clarity

Mental Health & Workplace Productivity

A study published on Rheumatology found that more than 50% of patients with autoimmune disorders experience depression and anxiety. WellTheory’s programs address the emotional needs of its patients, recognizing the link between autoimmune conditions and mental health conditions. Based on widely-utilized mental health surveys, such as the PHQ-9 and GAD-7, results reveal:

  • 61 percent of members reported improvements in depression (PHQ-9)
  • 60 percent of members reported improvements in anxiety (GAD-7)

With 15 percent of the workforce suffering from one of the more than 100 autoimmune conditions, workplace productivity is a top concern for both employees and employers. For example, 78 percent of full-time workers with Rheumatoid Arthritis reported that their job performance has suffered as a result of their diagnosis. Through WellTheory’s program, employees with autoimmune disease reported a 69 percent reduction in how often their symptoms got in the way of their work.

Healthcare Utilization & Cost-Savings Impact

Accorded, an independent third party actuarial intelligence company, conducted an analysis based on patient-reported healthcare utilization data and Merative MarketScan commercial benchmarks and quantified the following healthcare cost reductions as a result of members engaging in WellTheory’s program:

  • 71 percent reduction in costs of imaging services such as MRI, CT, or X-Ray
  • 64 percent reduction in emergency room visit costs
  • 38 percent reduction in overnight hospital stay costs
  • 15 percent reduction in biologics utilization costs

For employers who adopt its solution, WellTheory’s model provides an average of $9,389 in savings per patient on biologics and $5,181 per patient in savings across all autoimmune patients on a risk-adjusted basis.

This report comes at a time when employers are navigating how to mitigate healthcare costs, as employers spend, on average, four times more on patients with autoimmune disease than the average employee. WellTheory is partnering with renowned employers like Maven Clinic, the world's largest virtual clinic for women's and family health, to provide cost-effective autoimmune care while improving workplace productivity, which is also a top concern for employers.

“Maven is committed to making healthcare work for everyone—including our own employees,” said Kate Muzzatti, Chief People Officer of Maven Clinic. “Autoimmune diseases are often invisible, making it easy to overlook their impact in the workplace. With WellTheory, we are enabling our employees to feel seen and heard, with effective solutions to help them better manage their symptoms at work and at home.”

“I began battling my autoimmune disease in my mid-20s and struggled to climb the corporate ladder as a result of the debilitating symptoms I was suddenly facing,” said Ellen Rudolph, CEO and Co-Founder of WellTheory. “Having firsthand experience with the struggles employees face, especially women, is why I first decided to launch WellTheory’s enterprise solution a year ago. Twelve months later, the outcomes we’re now seeing underscore the critical need for broadened awareness and resources to support autoimmune conditions.”

WellTheory’s report highlights the potential for its innovative care model to transform how employers address the growing prevalence and costs of autoimmune diseases while improving quality of life for employees.
