Established Experts in Baltic and Balkan Travel, Baltic Travel Company, Highlight Last Minute City Breaks

Recently published data indicates changing travel appetites across the UK. This is thought to be due to factors such as the cost of holidays during the summer, a desire to travel during periods with less overcrowding, and the milder temperatures in spring and autumn.

In light of shifting consumer priorities, the travel experts at the Baltic Travel Company have shared details of late breaks in destinations across Finland, Latvia and Sweden, catering to families, solo travellers and groups looking for affordable weekend breaks and child-friendly holidays.

Understanding Developments in UK Travel Trends

As an independent travel provider recently celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Baltic Travel Company has become known for its expertise and custom itineraries that broaden access to unusual and unique countries and destinations.

Examples such as packages to explore Lapland during the festive season, tour the Scandinavian fjords on a spring whale-spotting expedition, or stay in a glass igloo or ice hotel to watch the Northern Lights attract significant interest from travellers of all ages.

Many of the trips and city breaks organised by the company also offer an alternative to conventional beach resorts – many of which have been subject to protests over the pressure influxes of tourists put on local amenities.

In an environment of surging demand for travel experiences during the warmth of the late summer, the company has recommended a selection of packages with limited remaining capacity.

Data Showing Demand for Late Spring and Early Autumn Travel Dates

The ABTA Holiday Habits 2023-24 report provides interesting statistics to demonstrate how and where travel appetites are changing:

  • 34% of travellers booking package breaks are now opting for city destinations.
  • May and June have become the most prevalent peak travel periods, overtaking July and August.
  • October is the second most popular time to travel, ideal for those keen to avoid the heat of mid-summer or looking for a late summer holiday.

Interest has also grown in more bespoke holidays, with travellers wanting to choose their own tours or trips, cater to parties of mixed ages, or hand-pick the types of activities that most appeal.

While 51% of holidays booked are readymade, 39% are customised with optional extras, 24% are fully personalised, and 11% are completely tailor-made to the guest.

Baltic Travel Company Releases Details of Late City Break Tours

In response to the shifts in the sector, Birthe Nielson, Managing Director at the Baltic Travel Company says, 'Travel trends and appetites naturally evolve, and we’ve seen that, for some time, the heavier penalties for parents travelling with school-age children during term time, hotter summers and generally higher costs in peak periods have led many guests to consider trips outside of the conventional holiday season.

September and October, for example, are fantastic times to travel, particularly for couples, retirees, and families with infants. Many want a comfortable temperature, the chance to relax, explore and try new things with minimal queuing, and their choice of flights and accommodation.

City breaks have also become more favoured, on par with the traditional beach holiday, where travellers are more likely to look for the opportunity to immerse themselves in different cultures and try diverse adventures and activities.

Many of the stunning cities in Eastern Europe and the Nordics blend incredible architecture, rich histories and heritages, amusement parks and retail districts, open landscapes and nature reserves, and higher-octane sports and water sports, all within a short distance of one central hotel.’

Late City Breaks Available to Book

The company clarifies that while numerous potential destinations, short breaks, and holiday types are readily available, others have limited remaining spaces, primarily in locations with short travel times and warm, pleasant climates at this time of the year.

It has highlighted tours, including those below:

  • Last minute breaks for golf enthusiasts: This four-day Bro Hof Castle Golf Break in Sweden is ideal for golfers, with world-class courses in a refined setting.
  • Romantic short breaks in late summer and autumn: The Helsinki & South Karelia five-day trip to Finland includes visits to iconic landmarks, waterfront dining, and travel around the lakes and fortresses.
  • Beach and city holidays in Europe: Combining beachside relaxation with a city break, the Latvian City and Sea seven-night package takes in the coastal town of Jurmala and the capital city of Riga.

Latvia enjoys average temperatures of up to 20°C in September, while Finland and Sweden remain mild with daytime temperatures of around 13°C to 14°C, with longer daylight hours before the autumn sets in towards early October.

Travellers can find further details and inclusions for the above packages and other last minute city break deals directly from the Baltic Travel Company.
