January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month: Free and Interactive Human Rights Educational Materials Offered to Help in Educating Youth about Human Rights Violations

Youth empowered with their rights and knowledge are more resilient, according to experts on trafficking. Youth for Human Rights International offers high quality materials educating youth and people of all ages on their fundamental human rights including Human Right #4: No Slavery, in any form.

-- January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and international statistics on trafficking show there is a huge problem still. While it is known that political instability and wars in various parts of the world help increase the risk of more falling victim to trafficking, statistics show that the majority of victims in the United States are US citizens.

Free materials are being offered on what your 30 human rights are as part of the campaign to prevent human trafficking and create a world where people treat each other with respect and dignity. Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) addresses these issues with “What Are Human Rights?” educational booklets provided free of charge and available for download with videos and a short documentary to fully explain the history of human rights.

YHRI is dedicated to educating people about their human rights per the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). There are 30 articles in the UDHR. Learning those articles empowers youth to become leaders as well as advocates for peace, tolerance, and the end of modern day slavery.

“Youth for Human Rights International focuses on preventive actions. We are working to change the course of the future by preventing the abuses from happening in the first place through broad scale education in the 30 basic human rights. Human rights education is the key to reversing our moral crisis and preventing modern day slavery, also known as human trafficking,” said Sylvia Stanard, a Youth for Human Rights organizer in Washington, DC.

In addition to providing free materials, Youth for Human Rights holds an annual summit at the United Nations. The Youth for Human Rights Washington, DC chapter lectures in schools, holds walks to raise awareness of human rights and art contests and exhibits in the Nation's Capital, like the Art Walk Dupont to showcase human rights centered art.

The interest of young people in learning their human rights led to the creation of 30 accompanying audiovisual public service announcements (PSAs). Each powerful PSA illustrates an article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through scenarios that are relatable, enabling individuals of any age and literacy level to understand and apply this document.

Filling the need for high-quality and effective human rights education, Youth for Human Rights offers a free online course to educate students in basic human rights and provides educators worldwide with complete education packages in 17 languages, free of charge.

Youth for Human Rights materials can be downloaded for free from www.youthforhumanrights.org. Educators can request a free educator kit on the website. The Youth for Human Rights Educator’s Guide contains lesson plans, enrichment activities, ideas for activating students on human rights education and a list of specific correlations of the lessons to model education standards. This is a resource for implementing a complete human rights curriculum in a class or school, or can be integrated into an existing curriculum.
