Southern New Jersey Appliance Expert: Consider Buying a Floor Model

Given the global supply chain issues affecting what retailers can keep in stock, Scot Saks, VP of Art Handler's Appliance Center in Pleasantville, NJ, advises consumers to consider purchasing a floor model. It's in stock and probably available at a deep discount.

With recent supply chain issues, many stores are struggling to fill their shelves and warehouses with an ample supply of products. According to one local expert, the appliance industry has been especially hard hit by these global issues.

Scot Saks, Vice President of leading southern New Jersey appliance retailer Art Handler’s Appliance Center, says consumers are often best served by taking what they can get, depending upon their individual circumstances. For example, Saks often advises shoppers in his store to consider buying a floor model, despite the stigma that comes with doing so. There are actually many pros to buying floor models, he says.

“As obvious as it sounds, the main pro to buying a floor model is that it’s actually physically here,” says Saks. “I’ve heard horror stories from customers who order an appliance, only to find out afterward that it has been placed on backorder for months. With the floor model, you can buy it now – probably at a significant discount – and take it straight to your place.”

Saks explains that buying a floor model is also an approach to getting a better deal. This is especially appealing when a new model is being released by the manufacturer. In many cases, the new model is merely a cosmetic upgrade over the previous one, and any new features not found in the old model are rather inconsequential compared to the appliance’s functionality. So the floor model gets discounted as a result, offering a great buying opportunity for consumers with good timing.

However, there are some cons. With the appliance stuck out in the open, things like handles, etc., may be damaged or missing, especially in the big box stores, where there aren’t enough personnel on the floor to keep a watch on everything. The original packaging, materials, and any additional supplies that would have been “in the box” are also likely to be damaged/missing. Fortunately, manuals can usually be found and downloaded online, and any missing or damaged tools and parts can usually be replaced or substituted easily. And if the floor model you’re looking to purchase is missing a component or two, but still works great, you may even get a better deal.
