Kreis Cup, the revolutionary new sustainable cup made completely of recycled coffee grounds and plant-based materials, is live on global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and a breakout success story having already reached their raise goal.
Every single day over 2 billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide. of which 75% of grounds end up in landfills where they decompose and generate methane—a green house gas 25 times more harmful to the environment than CO2 over a 100-year period.
“Our story is very simple. Just like most of you, we drink coffee every morning and are left with a dirty coffee filter containing wet coffee grounds that need to be discarded and washed away, many times creating a nice smelling mess,” says co-founder Ricardo Garcia on the inspiration behind the project. “We couldn’t stop thinking about all the coffee grounds thrown away in coffee shops and asked ourselves: ‘What if this waste is not really meant to be waste?’”
From there, the idea was conceived— a coffee cup made up of coffee ground “waste,” designed and engineered to last for years in homes, coffee shops, offices, hotels or restaurants. The Kreis Cup is free from petroleum-based plastics or any other environment harming substances. It is 100% sustainable, reusable and recyclable. The Kreis Way, our recycle program is intended to collect Kreis Cups at the end of their life span and repurpose them into new cups, never touching the landfill.
The Kreis Cup is designed to keep coffee hot longer and iced coffee cold until the last sip, thanks to its double-walled insulation. It is heat resistant and dishwasher safe while weighing half of a standard reusable cup. Even better, the Kreis Cup takes the coffee experience to the next level due to its natural coffee scent from the reused grounds.
“Kreis means circle, resembling our circular economy model based on the regeneration of natural materials into a sustainable product. The Kreis Cup is an alternative to disposable paper cups and aims to replace the end-of-life concept of used coffee grounds,” adds Garcia. “What’s better than a coffee-made cup that smells like coffee already?
