Denise Lee Branco is a multi-award-winning author whose passion is using her writing to highlight the human-animal bond and another to advocate for animal rescue. She is a member of the Dog Writers Association of America, Cat Writers Association, Northern California Publishers and Authors, Christian Indie Publishing Association, and other writing and publishing organizations. She has been a contributor to thirteen anthologies.
Denise is a volunteer member of Pilots N Paws®, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization involved with rescuing and transporting animals in need. She lives in the foothills of Northern California and loves leisure biking, foods with melted cheese, and spoiling her three rescued felines.

Tell us about Rabbit at the Sliding Door: Chloe's Story.
Denise’s life was forever changed the summer morning a curious rabbit hopped up to her sliding door and its innocent brown eyes captured her heart. For her own safety, the abandoned rabbit could no longer be free range. Denise and Chloe’s journey takes them both through harrowing situations to a reunion with the promise of protection, devotion, and serenity.
In this inspirational book, Denise shows the reader the magic of the human-animal bond and how her life was made better by a spirited bunny named Chloe.
What inspired you to write Rabbit at the Sliding Door: Chloe's Story?
My reason for writing Rabbit at the Sliding Door is three-fold. I wanted to honor a little bunny who impacted my life in huge ways, share our special bond with the world, and encourage readers to adopt a rescue animal.
While I was writing my book, I decided that I wanted to donate a portion of each book sale to an animal welfare organization. Since publication, I feel so fortunate to have been able to make donations that have helped rescued animals and those fleeing wildfires and wars.
It’s an amazing feeling to know that Chloe’s life still matters, and her story has improved the lives of so many animals.
How did your background and experience influence your writing?
I believe we are on this Earth to share our experiences and impact lives. Writing in the memoir genre allows me to do just that. I didn’t expect to become a professional writer, until my beloved horse, Freedom, passed away in 2008. I wanted to record cherished memories of our life together, so I put pen to paper and poured every emotion onto the page, resulting in my first book in 2010. I was hooked! I set out to become a better writer by spending the next several years honing my craft.
What’s interesting about becoming a published author is a long-forgotten detail about my childhood. As my mother and I were combing through an old box of her treasured keepsakes, we found grammar school stories that I had written. At the end of each story, I wrote “Denise Branco, Author”. What’s even more validating for me to be able to call myself a professional writer, is that Rabbit at the Sliding Door: Chloe’s Story has won 14 book awards! I think it’s safe to say, it wasn’t just meant to be; it is my calling!
What is one message you would like readers to remember?
I want readers to see how important animals are to our lives. They are teachers who help us grow, comforters when life is heavy, and impromptu comedians. We need them just as much as they need us. I can’t imagine going through life any other way.
