The company’s goal is to enable private and public stakeholders to expand the United States’ REE reserves, strengthen domestic supply chains for defense technologies, clean energy and accelerate mineral exploration through science and breakthrough technology.

AI + Physics for Subsurface Discovery

Vorticity’s platform combines physics-based inverse problems, AI, and large-scale uncertainty quantification to infer subsurface mineralization from geophysical data. Using GPU-accelerated HPC clusters, the system processed national-scale potential-field and geologic datasets to generate high-confidence REE prospectivity zones, each ranked with an associated confidence score.

“Rare earths power everything from electric vehicles to wind turbines and defense electronics,” said Chirath Neranjena, Founder and CEO of Vorticity Inc. “By open-sourcing these targets, we’re inviting private companies, universities, and federal agencies to adopt and extend the results. We want to transform greenfield exploration in the U.S into a highly lucrative national effort.”

Open Data, Open Science

The release includes:

  • Geospatial targets and ranked REE prospectivity zones with metadata
  • Technical whitepaper detailing inverse modeling, AI pipeline, and uncertainty quantification
  • Open-source subsurface dataset (CC BY 4.0 license)
  • Visual maps for researchers and agencies

The dataset and documentation are available at https://vorticity.xyz/open-ree.

“Our approach merges rigorous physics with modern AI,” said Paul Koettering, Project Lead at Vorticity. “It demonstrates how modern computing can reduce cost and accelerate mineral exploration by an order of magnitude or more.”

Expanding U.S. Critical Mineral Capacity

These targets could identify new domestic REE deposits, supporting federal goals to secure critical mineral supply chains for defence and advanced manufacturing. Vorticity is inviting private companies, federal agencies in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and academic partners to further refine and de-risk these targets.
